By faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. — Hebrews 11:3
As far as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated by the stars. I used to spend hours standing, sitting down or even laying on the ground, doing nothing else than staring at the sky.
I’ve always found it thrilling to think that there’s something more, beyond the edges of everything my little eyes could see.
It’s so easy to get caught up in everything going on around and not even realize that there’s so much more! Earlier this year I’ve started developing an increasing interest in Astronomy. What I’ve read about, the things I’ve heard about, documentaries that I’ve watched left me speechless.
When I think about the universe, how enormous it is; how many Galaxies there are; astronomers estimate that there are at least 200 billion galaxies within their current view from earth. The smallest of the galaxies are composed of about 100 million up to several billion stars!
When I think about all the trillion of stars that are spread around in the space! Astonishing! Even our Milky way the galaxy that contains our Solar System, is estimated to contain 100–400 billion stars and more than 100 billion planets.
My goodness! Those are not just numbers! I can’t even comprehend with my senses the tremendous immensity of what those mean!
Somewhere among this whole mix of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter is the sun, the star at the center of our solar system, which gravity is strong enough to hold 8 Planets, dozens of dwarf planets, 170 Moons, countless comets and asteroids!
Without the sun’s gravity, these celestial bodies would drift off into deep space.
Without the sun’s magnetic field, these celestial bodies would be emitted by harmful cosmic radiations.
Among these celestial bodies is one unique looking planet. The third Planet from the sun, the one we call home.
Earth is the only planet known to maintain life. It has a unique position in the solar system; close enough to be warm. Had the Earth been a little closer to the sun, its surface would have been exposed to extreme heat and solar radiation. Had it been a little further from the sun, the temperatures would have been so low that life on Earth would have been impossible.
Is this all pure hazard? Did it all come to existence all by itself?
Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made. — John 1:3
For modern astrophysics, the universe began in an event called the big bang about 14 billion years ago.
According to this theory all matter, energy, space and time came into being at the moment of the Big Bang.
The Big Bang Theory presents the origin of the universe out of nothing. Which I find hard to believe because out of nothing, nothing happens!
It is absurd to think that the universe just popped into being out of absolutely nothing.
The Big Bang Theory points to the need for a cause that transcends matter, space, time and energy.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. — Genesis 1:1
Modern science believes that the Universe is not eternal in the past but had a beginning a finite time ago.
In 1929 astronomer Edwin Hubble realized that the distant galaxies were all rushing away from us, establishing that space itself is stretching, it’s expanding.
As space expands the galaxies get further apart. This implies that as you trace the expansion back in time, they get closer and closer together until at some point in the finite past the entire universe is contracted down to a single point before which it literally did not exist.
The existence of the Universe is far away from being due to hazards only. Many conditions of Life depend on fine-tuned parameters without which no form of life would be possible.
All of this points to an Intelligent Designer.
The heavens declare the glory of God;the skies proclaim the work of his hands.Day after day they pour forth speech;night after night they reveal knowledge. —Psalm 19:1-2
Arno Penzias an American physicist, radio astronomer and Nobel laureate in physics who is co-discoverer of the cosmic microwave background radiation said:
Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing, one with the very delicate balance needed to provide exactly the conditions required to permit life, and one which has an underlying (one might say Supernatural) plan.
Dr: William Lane Craig an American analytic philosopher and Christian theologian, historian, and apologist said:
There is a transcendent cause of the physical Universe. when you reflect on what properties such a cause would have to have, a number of very theologically significant attributes fall out.
A transcendent cause of the physical universe must be:
immaterial — because he created all the matter in the universe
non-temporal/timeless — because he created time as well as space
it would have to be enormously Powerful in order to bring the universe into existence.
Astronomer George Greenstein in his book The Symbiotic Universe asks:
Is it possible that suddenly without intending to we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being?
Stephen Hawking theoretical physicist
It will be very difficult to explain why the universe should have begun in just this way except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us.
God planned everything so perfectly. He planned every single detail about your life and mine before we were even born!
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him In love — Ephesians 1:4
I believe in a creator. The one who brought everything into existence. The One who said, and it was. The One whose hands have kept the Earth into orbiting in its own trajectory around the sun all those billions of years until now, without colliding with any other planet. The One whose hand kept the Earth at its own position, stopping it to get closer or further away from the sun thereby eliminating every form of life.
All the beauty and the wonders of the universe fill me with great awe and opens my eye to see the majestic beauty of the One who made it all, the Fine-Tuner, the Intelligent Designer, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Father of my Lord Jesus-Christ who sustains everything by His Word.
